All makes and models of X360 drives can be modified. The firmware on the drive is replaced with a modified version which enables the console to recognise your backed-up games. This does not affect or alter the region code of the console, therefore region-specific still applies.
The faceplate must be removed from your console. Look into the oval shaped hole on the front of the drive to check the colour of the tray switch wires. Each model has different coloured wires and this is how we can tell the drives apart.

All makes of the Lite On version of X360 drives in new SLIM's can be modified. Consoles with a Manufacture PRIOR to 2011-08-10 do not need a replacement PCB and costs range from R600 - R800. Consoles with a Manufacture AFTER to 2011-08-10 need a replacement PCB and costs R1000. The firmware on the drive is replaced with a modified version which enables the console to recognise your backed-up games. This does not affect or alter the region code of the console, therefore region-specific still applies.
Eject the Drive tray and look at the shape of the hole in the tray itself - See Image
